Traditional Knowledge
Conference 2008

8th to 11th June 2008
Auckland
New Zealand

The pictures above portray a ‘challenge’ which takes place as part of the traditional Māori welcome. The warrior assesses the situation to determine whether the visitors come in peace or not. He runs forth, jumps about, and swings his staff about. He lays an offering before the visitors. By picking up the offering, they signify that the visit is peaceful. On seeing this, the elderly woman calls to the visitors and beckons them onto the village fore-court.

Dr Laiana Wong is a professor in the Hawai‘inuiäkea School of Hawaiian Knowledge at the University of Hawai’i at Mänoa. His address refocused responsibility for solving social problems back on indigenous peoples themselves by taking a critical look at how well they are maintaining traditional values.

Jim Everett from Tasmania is the Aboriginal representative on the Advisory Board of the Australian National Film and Sound Archive and has a national profile as a published writer, poet, and documentary
film-maker. His address looked at ways to prevent the effects of the ‘colonial dome of thinking’ as it continues to assimilate Aboriginal knowledge.
