Traditional Knowledge
Conference 2008

8th to 11th June 2008
Auckland

The pictures above portray a ‘challenge’ which takes place as part of the traditional Māori welcome. The warrior assesses the situation to determine whether the visitors come in peace or not. He runs forth, jumps about, and swings his staff about. He lays an offering before the visitors. By picking up the offering, they signify that the visit is peaceful. On seeing this, the elderly woman calls to the visitors and beckons them onto the village fore-court.

Community

The international conference with associated community workshops and satellite meetings enables us to bring together in dialogue a wide range of participants, perspectives, voices, frameworks and models for understanding indigenous frameworks.

These sessions are timetabled to take place on the first evening, after the traditional Maori welcome and dinner on the marae, in an indigenous cultural setting.

Community organisations and/or satellite meetings wishing to make a presentation should submit an Abstract.  See the Abstracts page for the guidelines. The conference organisers will consider applications by overseas indigenous groups to make presentations in this slot.  These will be limited however. There is a likelihood that parallel sessions will be run on the marae that evening.
